Care, custody, and control
Garage keepers triggers any time a customer vehicle is in your care, custody, or control. That includes the service drive, the parts loading area, the body shop bay, the valet stand, and overnight parking after a service appointment. The coverage does not require fault โ some structures pay regardless of who caused the damage; others pay only when you were at fault.
How garage keepers fits with the other coverages
- vs DOL โ DOL is your inventory. Garage keepers is the customer's vehicle. Your salesman's demo is on DOL; the trade-in you took yesterday is on garage keepers.
- vs Garage liability โ garage liability is third-party injury. Garage keepers is property damage to a specific customer vehicle. Different exposures.
- Service vs sales operations โ pure service operations (no sales) can carry garage keepers without DOL. Pure online dealers (no service) can carry DOL without garage keepers. Most full-service dealers carry all three.
Fault-based vs non-fault structures
Two common policy structures:
- Direct primary (non-fault) โ the carrier pays for damage to the customer vehicle regardless of who is at fault. Higher premium, broader response.
- Legal liability (fault-based) โ the carrier pays only when you are legally liable for the damage. Lower premium, narrower response.
Most franchise dealers carry direct primary because the customer-experience cost of a disputed claim outweighs the premium difference. We discuss both structures during the quote.

Valet operations
Valet adds a moving-vehicle exposure beyond static custody. Common claim drivers: keys handed to the wrong customer, valet driver damaging an adjacent vehicle, lot congestion at peak hours. Carriers expect documented valet procedures: driver licensing, key-control system, designated parking layout, and damage-inspection protocol at hand-back. We schedule valet as its own line if it is a meaningful revenue stream.
